New Atlantic Cod Rules in Effect for Recreational Anglers

CONCORD, N.H. — Marine rule changes will allow a very limited recreational harvest of cod from August 1 through September 30, thereby expanding opportunities for New Hampshire’s recreational saltwater anglers.

The slight ease on restrictions was possible because “Last year’s stock assessment concluded that, although Gulf of Maine cod remains overfished and subject to overfishing, biomass has increased slightly,” explained NH Fish and Game Marine Fisheries Supervisor Cheri Patterson.

N.H. Fish and Game adjusted the requirements on recreational fishing for cod, as follows:
The recreational bag limit for cod has increased to 1 per day from August 1 to September 30.
The minimum length required to keep a cod is 24 inches, with a minimum fillet size of 14 inches.
The seasonal closure period for recreationally caught cod is October 1 to July 31 annually.

The new rules apply in both state and federal waters.
