LONGER TERM MAJOR PATTERN CHANGE UNDERWAY FOR
AFTER CHRISTMAS STILL ON COURSE!
GFS model for Christmas and beyond. Im just looking at the upper air flow across the country and not any storm threats though I imagine that there would be something in one form or another during this stretch. No doubt we are changing to a colder than normal scheme across much of the Midwest and Northeast. So much for much for the above normal temps forecast that was floating around a few days ago.
For you weather geeks out there the N.A.O. goes negative..the A.O. goes negative and the PNA goes to almost neutral..good enough!!
In English: There are long term indicators that forecasters look at. These are basically oscillations that occur in the broad upper atmosphere. The N.A.O. is the north atlantic oscillation. When it goes negative we get blocking and cold air is forced into the eastern US. It is going negative. The arctic oscillation or AO indicates warming over the poles. When this happens like it did in November..cold air is displaced southward into the United States. The Pacific North America pattern or pna is another measure. Negative is cold in the east. It is forecast to go neutral.
